Choosing the right Piano when starting as a beginner can seem a daunting task. With a massive range of brands, types, shapes and sizes, it can be hard choosing the right one to match your needs.
The first step in choosing a piano for a beginner is to decide whether you want a keyboard, a digital piano, or an acoustic piano.
Keyboard
Keyboards are small and lightweight.
They could be perfect for a child showing interest in music and learning the relationship between the notes.
The keys can feel very different to an acoustic piano and depending on the size of keyboard depends on how many notes you can play.
Digital Piano
This is the most popular choice for beginners, with its weighted keys it can be similar to playing an Acoustic piano which is what your exams will be taken on ( if you choose that route)
The advantages of a digital piano are its volume, it can be turned up or down and played with headphones, they never need tuning and they have different sounds.
As you go further up in price range for a digital piano you they have a more authentic feel. If you are serious about learning or wish to start grading you will need a piano with 88 weighted keys.
Acoustic Piano
Acoustic pianos have a rich sound that is hard to replicate digitally. They can be loud but if you will have no complaints they are great for starting out, authentic and as a piano should be.
One thing to look out for is whether the piano is overstrung. This refers to how the strings lie within the piano – they’re strung diagonally, firstly, to reduce the physical footprint of the instrument, and secondly so that the keys are more responsive, allowing you to play with more expression and emotion.
An acoustic piano is one of the best authentic options for a beginner learning to play. They do need to be tuned regularly (around every 6 months) They’re also heavy and can be difficult to move.
